Sweet Revenge Strangers on a Bridge Reviewed by Bruce Cantwell You'll recognize the plot device from STRANGERS ON A TRAIN or THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN but this time the two miserable souls meet while attempting to jump off London's Tower Bridge. Karen Knightly (Helena Bonham Carter) and Henry Bell (Sam Neill) could just KILL the person who did them wrong. In Karen's case, it's Imogen Staxton-Billing (Kristin Scott Thomas) whom she blames from winning back her own womanizing, squirrel-hunting husband Anthony (Martin Clunes). In Henry's case it's Bruce Tick (Steve Coogan) the ruthless, asthmatic corporate exec who cost Henry his job. Karen is just psychotic enough to suggest that they could each rub out the other's albatross and no one would be the wiser. Henry Bell is the milquetoast who agrees. Malcom Mowbray's adaptation of Alan Ayckbourn's REVENGERS' COMEDIES plays the laughs broadly. When Henry Bell awakens in a room in Karen's castle, housemaid Winnie (Liz Smith) finds him tied to a four poster wearing nothing but a fuzzy little g-string. There's little but British stiff upper lip keep this farce from spinning into Farrelly Brothers. territory. It's the way that Henry Bell and Anthony Staxton-Billing refuse to tone down their man-to-man discussion about Karen's sexual peccadilloes even though they're surrounded by children who hang on every word and the way that Henry Bell strives to maintain his dignity while attired in Austin Powers' second hand clothes with hunting hounds slurping kipper grease from his pants that makes it all work.
