Nurse BettyNURSE BETTY

A DOCTORED ROMANTIC COMEDY

Reviewed by Bruce Cantwell

Neil LaBute isn't known for his romantic sensibilities. IN THE COMPANY OF MEN was about two businessmen who form a pact to seduce and abandon a shy office girl. YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS was reputed to be even more brutal. It doesn't seem like he'd be the ideal candidate to create a romantic comedy for Renée Zellweger and Greg Kinnear. Of course, NURSE BETTY is a sick and twisted romance.

Betty (Zellweger) is a small town waitress obsessed with the hospital soap opera A REASON TO LOVE and its hero Doctor David Ravell (Kinnear). Because of this fantasy and a dissatisfying marriage to the sleazy Del (Aaron Eckhardt). When a "complication" frees her from her obligations at home, Betty decides to seek out her old beau David Ravell, who she imagines once asked her to marry him.

Charlie (Morgan Freeman) and Wesley (Chris Rock) would like to locate Betty to discuss a business deal concerning her husband but nobody around town seems to know where she is.

Twenty minutes into the film, we find ourselves in a post-Tarentino screwball comedy with delightful performances by an excellent cast that also includes Crispin Glover and Pruitt Taylor Vance. Freeman and Rock are particularly funny. Part of the enjoyment comes from watching such mainstream stars and Hollywood polish in service of a perverse little story.

About three-quarters of the way through the film, however, we sense the script doctor's hand as the journey begins circling the airport in search of a safe landing. It's hard to imagine who this ending is for. An episode earlier in the film should be more than enough to clear the theater of folks who'd appreciate it.

Still, if I'd give 3/4 of the film four stars, it's hard not to recommend it.
