deserves 4 stars! by Bruce Cantwell Two army officers comb an old, desert firing range with a metal detector: the kind you buy at Radio Shack. Strong reading. Lucky stiffs. A little digging and they uncover an old sheriff's badge, a Masonic ring and...oh yeah, a human skull. It doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to guess that the skull once sat on Sheriff Charlie Wade's (Kris Kristofferson) shoulders. Ah, so that's what happened when the old sonofabitch disappeared--what was it?--must be twenty years ago! Nobody much cared at the time. Deputy Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey) was a natural to take over the reins. Best thing could have happened to Frontera.   Today's sheriff, Buddy's son Sam (Chris Cooper), is nowhere near what his daddy was. But Sam is the man who must stare down the past. See, Sam didn't see Buddy in the same light as the town folks. Buddy, as a father, orchestrated the break-up between young Sam and the love of his life Pilar (Elizabeth Pena) just because she is a Mexican.   Tricky thing is...it was well known that no love was lost between Charlie, "one of your bribe 'n bullets sheriffs" and his civil servant deputy Buddy. Why it wasn't long before Charley's disappearance that he and Buddy got in a scuffle at a restaurant. That's when Buddy threatened to kill him.   After twenty years, untangling the threads of corruption, convenient forgetfulness, and racism in a Texas border town where blacks, whites, native Americans and Mexicans must coexist, proves a ticklish thing. And Writer/Director John Sayles subtly demonstrates that the past isn't as buried as deeply as we think.
