High Fidelity Reviewed by Bruce Cantwell There are two good reasons to see High Fidelity if you haven't yet. The first is Jack Black. He's one of those John Belushi, Chris Farley, go for broke, fat comic actors who has been in Tim Robbins movies and a lot of dreck. In this one he bounds into John Cusack's cult record shop, rips out a cassette playing despair rock and bounds about the stage to an upbeat eighties pop tune with a glee that rivals Steve Martin's happy feet. I'm not saying that if Jack Black's character had been the center of the film instead of comic relief that the movie would have been better. It would more likely have degraded into a Jim Carrey movie but played against John Cusack's romantic woes (reminiscent of the traumatic turbulence in About Last Night) it's refreshing. The other good reason to see High Fidelity is Tim Robbins. In a gem of a small, character role, Robbins portrays a New Age, pony tail crisis resolution counselor (or something like that) with perfect tongue-in-cheek precision. My reservations about the film revolve around the suspension of disbelief. The women are either far too good looking (Catherine Zeta Jones) or far too together (Iben Hjelje) to see anything in the John Cusack character who is pretty much a charisma free bumb. Mild recommendation.
