The Blair Witch Project Reviewed by Bruce Cantwell

So how scary is it?

I'll tell you this. I saw it in a packed house. During a particularly tense scene, the ushers, as a joke, decided to bang on the doors. The audience levitated and took a good minute or so to laugh, catch its breath and settle back into the movie.

We were caught by surprise because we were involved. I won't say that I forgot I was watching a movie but the movie had my full attention.

Talking heads work better in documentaries than they do in fictional films. There's a greater immediacy watching a person think of what to say than there is watching even the most skilled actor deliver someone else's lines.

Heather, Mike and Josh are always completely natural. They're excited to be starting on the project. The guys tease Heather about her gung ho, take charge attitude and constantly needle her about her navigational abilities once she gets them lost in the woods the first time.

I'm surprised how funny the film is. Anyone who has ever been involved in a group project will recognize the dynamics as genuine. The camaraderie of shared purpose coincides and butts heads with teaming two against one to shift the power dynamic.

When the group is awakened by noises in the middle of the night, Mike seems reticent to get out of the tent and explore. When chided about fear of witches he quickly points out that they're in the middle of the woods and if some locals are just playing with their heads, they've gone to a lot of trouble to do it. He doesn't want to get caught up in some "Deliverance" type deal.

By the end of the film, the characters are hungry, exhausted, demoralized and unsure of which way to turn next.

In a touching moment, Heather turns a camera on herself and apologizes for making such a mess of things. Tears flow down her cheeks as she speaks.

The hand held camera work makes "The Blair Witch Project" nearly unwatchable at times but fortunately the story can be followed with closed eyes.

Oh, yes. How scary is it?

I believe it's the scariest fictional film I've seen.
