- Chuck and Buck - Story of two boyhood friends separated at puberty, one of whom goes on with his life, the other who misses the boat. A no budget independent feature with solid lead performances and outstanding supporting performances.
- Chicken Run - Nick Parkand Peter Lord, of Wallace and Grommit fame, give us a claymation homage to The Great Escape as chickens at a failing egg farm must escape or face the pie machine!
- Best in Show - This is Spinal Tap meets the rarefied world of the dog show is the funniest film of the year. Christopher Guest reunites Michael McKean, Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey from Waiting for Guffman.
- Requiem for a Dream - Darren Aranofsky's (Pi) second feature is a technically dazzling, harrowing tale of drug addiction grounded by Ellen Burstyn giving the year's best performance. With Jared Leto, Damon Wayans, Jennifer Connelly.
- You Can Count on Me - Ken Lonergan's Sundance movie about a rambunctious drifter (Mark Ruffalo) his small town, religious sister (Laura Linney) and their competing influences on the sister's eight-year-old boy (Yetanother Culkin).
- House of Mirth - Edith Wharton's look at the darker side of social climbing in the early years of the twentieth century. Good cast led by Gillian Anderson and Eric Stoltz.
- Almost Famous - Semi-autobiographical look at Cameron Crowe's teenage days as a rock 'n roll reporter is smarter than your average teen fantasy flick. Goldie Hawn's daughter Kate Hudson is exceptional.
- Nurse Betty - Screwball black comedy by Neil LaBute bears the fingerprints of studio tampering. Renee Zellweger is good as a mentally deranged TV soap opera fan. Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock provide comic relief as a pair of dysfunctional assassins. Happy ending achieved through Hollywood magic.
- High Fidelity - The best reason to see this is Jack Black. He's one of those John Belushi, Chris Farley, go for broke, fat comic actors who has been in Tim Robbins movies and a lot of dreck. In this one he bounds into John Cusack's cult record shop, rips out a cassette playing despair rock and bounds about the stage to an upbeat eighties pop tune with a glee that rivals Steve Martin's happy feet.
- State and Main - Amiable enough David Mamet, skewering Hollywood in light comedy mode. This one has W.H. Macy directing a period piece in a sleepy New England town has high jinks ensue. David Paymer stands out as a take-no-prisoners producer. Alec Baldwin, Philip Seymour Hoffman.
